Mead grand slam carries Bite to victory
12/22/2018 2:07 AM ET

Behind Curtis Mead's first ABL grand slam and a trademark Markus Solbach start, Adelaide defeated Auckland 9-1 in their seven-inning clash at Mt Gambier.

It was the perfect start to Saturday's doubleheader with Mead going 3-for-4 with six RBI while Aaron Whitefield went 3-for-5 with two RBI.

They were a deadly duo in attack with the home run just Mead's second in 41 games for the Bite.

The 18-year-old was not trying to swing for the fences with his hit, rather play a team game.

"It was loaded bases, one out, so I was just trying to hit something in the air and get one runner in at least, but it turned out better," Mead said.

"When everyone's playing well it's a really good feeling.

"Auckland have lot of young talent too, from Auckland and internationally so they are strong competition."

Starter Solbach was quiet through his first three innings, he had just three strikeouts to that point, before the Mt Gambier locals were treated to a pitching clinic from the ABL's best starter of the season.

As Auckland turned to the bullpen, he ramped up his pitching offense to finish with 10 strikeouts from seven innings and just two hits.

The only blemish was an early home run, however he tore through the Tuatara to put that hit in the back of his mind.

Adelaide leads the series 2-0 ahead of Saturday's 7pm game, which is the full nine innings.
