Warwick Saupold: Two years in the bigs
Two years on from his MLB debut, we take a look back at Warwick Saupold's career
05/15/2018 3:18 AM ET

14 May 2016 - Warwick Saupold became the 32nd Australian to play in the MLB when he tossed 0.2 scoreless innings for the Detroit Tigers against the Baltimore Orioles.

Two years on, Saupold has amassed 64 more appearances over parts of three seasons, whilst pitching to a respectable 4.72 ERA.

What a journey, right.

Having come through the ranks at the Perth Heat, the South Perth Cub penned a minor-league contract with Detroit in 2012 after a standout ABL season where he led the league with a 1.41 ERA in 70 innings.

Since then, the now 28-year-old has gone on to represent Team Australia at the World Baseball Classic and has established himself as one of the most successful Australian's to play in the MLB in recent years.

"Waz just gets better and better on the mound each week, and it's a credit to him he's stuck around the league for two years," Heat Chief Executive Lachlan Dale said.

"We hope to see him continue on his form."

2018 has been by far Saupold's best in a Tigers uniform - posting a 2.35 ERA in 14 games.

The reliever even recorded his first career save on 21 April against the Kansas City Royals.

Despite a brief demotion to Triple-A, Saupold has been the Tigers' most consistent reliever in 2018 and has seen his responsibilities increase in recent weeks.
