SYDNEY - The Sydney Blue Sox are pleased to announce the signing of QLD-native Connor MacDonald for the 2017/18 Australian Baseball League season.

At only 21 years of age, MacDonald has a solid amount of international baseball under his belt, playing both in the Minor Leagues in the Houston Astros pipeline and representing Australia in the 2016 U23's World Championships in Mexico.

MacDonald is excited to join the Blue Sox this season and is "looking forward to the opportunity to play for new Blue Sox manager, Tony Harris, once again".

The infielder was signed to a professional contract by the Houston Astros' organisation back in 2009 at the youthful age of 16. "I was signed out of the Australian Academy, and it is a day that I will never forget. I was so grateful for the opportunity to play professionally in the United States." says MacDonald reflecting on the beginning of his international baseball career.

Connor also claims that his baseball career highlight came when he played for Australia in the U23's World Championship last year in Mexico where he and Team Australia earned a Silver medal. "The friendships I've made from that team and the chemistry all of us boys had was pretty special."

MacDonald also has already had plenty of experience playing in the Australian Baseball League, having debuted for the Brisbane Bandits in the 2012/13 season.

His Minor League career was highlighted by hitting for 'the cycle'* last year with the Greeneville Astros in the Appalachian League. Career stats included 520 at bats, 201 total bases, 74 RBIs with a batting average of .252.

Blue Sox CEO Mark Marino commented that "we are extremely excited to have Connor on board and continue to promote young, domestic Australian talent. Having played against his father Ken, I know that he comes from a great family and good stock. Connor will be a valuable addition both on and off the field."

*The 'cycle' is when a batter hits a single, double, triple and a home run in one game.
